Procrastinator is Your Motivator

April 26, 2013

It looks like another day to do everything but what I'm suppose to do. I looked at the list of the to do's and shook my head. Create this report, prepare this spreadsheet, look up that regulation. And then there was that one task. That task that I had been tinkering with for weeks now and that should have been done weeks ago. That task that was not difficult but also not fun. That task because it HAD TO be done was undesireable.  I'd have more fun if I were the computer burner scoring 01010101 in various sequences on the disk by hand.

I thought more on this point. And then...

I journaled, wrote, answered some emails. I journaled some more. I scheduled some scouting events. I cleaned up parts of the house. I did this, I did that. I did everything except for that one task on my list.

I thought some more on this point. And then...

I answered some more emails, I did some research on regulatory issues. I answered some more emails. Again, I did everything except that which needed to be done.

I thougth some more on this this point. And then...

I wrote this...

I'm Writing My Story Anyways

April 25, 2013

"Oh my goodness" said Bill out loud to himself. He didnt' really like to hear himself talk. It just popped out.

After listening to the radio broadcast, Bill thought he would never write. The radio announcer was doing a piece on story writing. She shared how important it was to get your reader hooked in the first few lines. And, she went on to share tricks, tips, and examples.

Bill always wanted to write. Yet after hearing the examples, he knew it was a doomed effort. Bill was never a very good writer but he knew quality and as such was overwhelmed by the descriptive, engaging story introductions. Bill tried to create a similar piece without success. The tips and tricks were just not working.

Bill was about to give up excepting that he was unaware of a stubborn streak in him. The same stubborn streak that often got him trouble in school, in life and almost everywhere. Why not in writing?

Yep, Bill thought to himself - screw it - I'm writing a story anyways. Maybe I'll write a 1,000 stories or just one. Maybe I'll write a novel, or a poem, or whatever the heck I want....

iPad

April 22, 2013

The blog hd been out there much longer than some ithingamagig. What is this tablet thing anyways. A screen with a virtual keyboard and computing all in one. How simple. How quaint. There's no form.

The blog thought more about this invasion of the thin paper like tablet. Well I don't like it bought the blog. There's nothing sexy about it. No cords. No fancy desktop ones with fans and lights and fun. You can't mix and match the monitor with the keyboard and the mouse.  It's ridiculous.

And what about upgrades and improvements. I bet you can't add memory or graphic cards.

Blog thought and thought and thought. What does this mean foe me thought blogger. I was starting to grow and expand and do fancy stuff as parts of fancy sites. Now I have plain simple curve less unsexy talent typing on my sit with of all things a fake virtual keyboard.

Blog was scared. What if they simplify me. Take me back to block text and   And.  Oh no don't say it.  To DOS.

It's sad. Blog no longer understood. Simple is good.

Instant and Wait Mismatched

March 9, 2011

he clicked on his computer and waited and waited  20 minutes later it is up and running and the work day starts  that is wait time watching the hourglass and clicking a button, waiting for the screen login to type and click anothher button  that is wait time watching the computer screen flicker as it laods setting so you a can click another button and wait   this is time spent every morning and every evening as he waits again for the computer to shut down  ironically, the automation of the computer was never so dependent on the human finger to push a button to be able to deliver the tools for instant communications and information management. he added the hours of time spent in a year on watching the automated computer manual finger push dance and he threw up.

whew now the computer is up. so he types and types and types.  he moves text, graphics, and data around.  he reads and reads and reads he added the seconds spent on what the dialogue of humanity and did a quick ratio

what was the time per activity in dialogue  it was nothing compared to the hours...

Mode Rate From Right to Left

October 20, 2010

There they are sitting on the fence. That narrow, gray fence that runs between the right and left sides of the field. When are they going to make a decision and how do we ge them to our side. They can't stay on that fence all day, they need to choose.

The rights worked diligently to switch the middle their way and the left pulled just as hard. Eventually the middle would sway. There may be a few that held out. There were always those that stood on the fence and refused to make a decision, which in itself is a decision. They abstained.

I watched them from afar and didn't quite undertand how this large silent majority could be held for so long on the thin divide between right and left. Then I took a walk. At the time I was on the right. I kept my head down as I left the right and avoided the taunts and jeers as I moved left. I knew I'd be cheered on the left until such time I left back to the right. Then, when I was deep in the left I looked up again to the middle. Yep, there they...

Tax a crastinator

February 16, 2009

"Boy oh boy, its tax season." said little Joey. This was his favorite time of the year.

Last year, Joey was just 7 years old and hadn't quite caught on to his new found power. Then one day, Joey get's a surprise. It was cold and gloomy outside. Joey's best friends were not able to play. Joey was bored and had enough of it. He wanted to go outside. He knew the chance of getting his dad to go were very slim, yet he gave it a try.

"Dad, let's go ride bikes." Dad was reading the paper. He looked distracted and responded without thinking. "Son I'm going to finish reading the paper and then I need to get the taxes done." Then Joey heard his dad stumble as if he just ate some of those awful brussel sprouts they keep asking Joey to eat. Dad did a double take, saying "..uhhhh, but wait, I think you're in luck. Time with my son is much more important than taxes. Let's take a ride" Dad and son layered their clothing for quick ride int he chilly air. It was refreshing and rewarding for Joey, he'd usually never get to ride in...

Branches to the sun

June 17, 2008

Every morning the sun rose on a new day and every evening its setting marked the night.  All of life was this simple.

"You're crazy dad" remarked the youngest with a smile, "I don't understand what you just said." It was true, abstract thought was not a part of the youth, his life was driven by simplicity. He played, worked, lived and grew each day and rested each night. The distractions of complexities had yet to reach his obvious self.

"When can I go play with my friends?" The oldest was anxious and uncertain. Playing was simple. Life was simple. His growth was challenged as he was introduced to more and more of the simple life. Work? Play? Relationships? Rules? Somehow, it seemed less simple.

"Which path will you choose? Will you go down the well trodden or explore the overgrown forest? Regardless, know that the path is not straight nor is this the only fork, life's simple road expands like the branches on a tree and end in mid air as it stretches to drink in the morning sun."

Dad began his story that night around the tree, the ant and the squirrel. "Leave a small footprint and find branches to explore. Keep yourself...

Just a little snow will do it

February 13, 2008

The boy had begged for a little snow. It was now February and we had barely even seen a flurry. Instead mother nature ridiculed winter with dreary April rain sans Spring flowers. Then she must have had a change or heart. I like to think the boys wish melted her heart and brightened her smile. Tear ceased to drop from her cheeks and the snow drifted off the warmed soul. Cheer rained, nay snowed on the boys day.

As with all regions where snow rarely shows its white head, school was cancelled and everyone cheered. Parents squeezed out a vacation day to join their kids, rolling in the snow and making angels. Winter light beamed off the blanket of white and night seemed like morning.

The next day the snow hardened into a crusty ice. That would be the end of the fun for the old of heart. Not so for the young. Seven year olds invented new games by tossing ice into basketball hoops. They made up for the missing bounce with the slide and added new levels of risk. Dad had to supervise closely.  And the day went on....

A long way to go a short distance

February 1, 2008

Brothers boomed out "Yeah!  We did it!"  Only a few yards and two rooms away the young ones abused their new technology.  "Go Fish," shouted the youngest as his older brother failed to solicit the right cards. Tunes popped out of the tiny speakers each time a turn was taken. The boys were laughing and cheering and yelling across the room. Father mused at the fact that his son's were playing the old, tried and true Fish game over the computer on Webkinz. Each play from one computer was broadcast miles to a server and bounced back instantly on the second computer. "A long way to go a short distance," thought their old man.  "At least personal space issues were assured as one brother wouldn't pummel the other in his excitement." Ahhhh, but then they still have their legs to run to the others room and initiate the obligatory taunts that were best administered by touch than by yell. The youth truly know how to engage the virtual world.
